"One Chip Challenge"

Dear Berylwood Parents,

We are hoping to bring a disturbing trend to your attention and ask for your help to keep our students safe. In the past few days we have confiscated a few of the PAQUI "One Chip Challenge" kits and we are telling students that their parent can pick those up at the end of the day. We are asking for your help with this because many students have an adverse reaction to the spicy concoction that the chip is covered in. Some of these adverse reactions are vomiting, abdominal pain, swelling, red lips, burning lips, burning eyes, runny nose and trouble breathing. If students touch the chip then rub their eyes or other sensitive parts of their bodies they will realize the oils from the Carolina Reaper and Scorpion peppers will quickly cause irritation and burning. We are prohibiting these "One Chip Challenge" kits or anything similar from our campus in order to keep our students safe.

The Paqui website contains a clearly displayed warning that states in all caps:

“DO NOT EAT IF YOU ARE SENSITIVE TO SPICY FOODS, ALLERGIC TO PEPPERS, NIGHTSHADES OR CAPSAICIN, OR ARE PREGNANT OR HAVE ANY MEDICAL CONDITIONS. KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN. AFTER TOUCHING THE CHIP, WASH YOUR HANDS WITH SOAP, AND DO NOT TOUCH YOUR EYES OR OTHER SENSITIVE AREAS. SEEK MEDICAL ASSISTANCE SHOULD YOU EXPERIENCE DIFFICULTY BREATHING, FAINTING, OR EXTENDED NAUSEA.”

Thank you for your cooperation with this request.
